LED stands for Light Emitting Diode. Diodes are a semiconductor device that will conduct electricity in only one direction.
The original LEDs only emitted light of one frequency or colour, these included blues, greens, yellows, oranges or reds and they were unsuited to domestic lighting.
Now with the introduction of LEDs that emit light in all visible frequencies to produce white light an LED globe can now provide the same output in light as their incandescent or fluorescent equivilant.
LEDs are also very rugged and are not subject to fail when dropped or vibrated and have a much longer lifetime. Plus LED lighting consumes considerably less power than conventional halogen or incandescent lighting and in some cases the saving can be up to 80%.
